Diwali is a widely celebrated holiday in India and across the globe. It marks the return of Rama after defeating the demon king, Ravana. Also known as The Festival of Lights, Diwali is commemorated with huge celebrations. Lights and candles are lit throughout the home to welcome Rama back home and symbolize light over darkness.

Many people also decorate by placing powder in an intricate way to create elaborate rangoli designs on the sidewalk. These decorative displays are said to bring good luck.

The designs on my cookies are not nearly as elaborate as the ones seen on Diwali, but simply mark and ode to them.

This design is perfect for beginners! I am still learning myself, so follow along with my throughout this "cookie series."

Now, onto the tutorial:

Rangoli Inspired Sugar Cookies

First, make sure you have all of your materials

- one circular sugar cookie (recipe to come)

- 1 piping bag with a #3 tip

- 1 rubber band to secure the icing in the piping bag

- about one small bowls worth of white border royal icing (recipe to come)

- about one small bowls worth of flood royal icing

- Two small spoons

- yellow, blue, and green food dye

optional:

- yellow and green sprinkles

Second, mix your icing colors

Get two separate bowls and split your flood icing between them. Then, put about two drops of yellow food dye into one bowl, and 4 drops of blue and 3 drops of green in the other.

Third, fill your piping bag

Secure the tip to the piping. After that, add your all of your white border royal icing into the piping bag. To make this easier, I recommend getting a large cup and putting the piping bag inside of it. Then, pull the top of the piping bag over the edges of the cup. This will make it a lot easier to fill your piping bag. Finally, secure you piping bag by tying a rubber band across the top.

Fourth, start piping your border

Lightly squeezing your piping bag to make a flower-like border around the perimeter of the cookie.

Then, make a small circle in the center of the cookie.

Fifth, flood your cookies

Fill in your cookies by taking your spoon and placing the icing in the spots shown.

Sixth, add the final touches!

Place the one orange sprinkle inside each "flower petal." Finally, place one green sprinkle inside the yellow circle.
